Kinetic Stereokids

Despite the fact that Flint, Michigan has consistently made it on worst place to live lists, there have been a lot of cool exports from F-town over the years: Chevy trucks, Michael Moore (love him or hate him), me. Musically the other motor city (Detroit) has gotten a lot more attention over the years, but Flint has a strong musical tradition as well. A list of some of the better known bands includes Grand Funk Railroad, Dissonance, Ready for the World, MC Breed, and now, Kinetic Stereokids. I always love running across good music out of my hometown. You can take the boy outta Flint but you can’t take Flint outta the man so I gotta represent.

Aside from the homey nostalgia you’ve got to love a band that has been compared to Beck and sites Can and The Beastie Boys as influences. Not that any of these bands can necessarily be heard in today’s mp3 “Have A Nice Day,” but you can’t win them all and it’s a great track anyway. As the name implies, the track is a groovy, feel good song. Rhythm guitar and a rolling banjo open the track. Some squeaky violin cuts through the chorus. The bridge rolls with some flanged classic rock guitar. Whether or not they will be Flint’s White Stripes I don’t know but they’re a great band from a bad (in many senses of the word) city.
