One of the things I’ve always liked about music is that it can draw from past forms, create future forms, or combine the two, but is always about a present moment experience. Music can also be about place and, on July 4th, nothing says America more than Bluegrass and Country. Hailing from Nashville, a town dripping with a strong musical tradition from which to draw, Old Crow Medicine Show is out to prove that they can deal in those past musical forms with the best of them. As much about people and their stories as the instruments used, the most effective Americana draws you into the lives of the characters and brings you to the point of caring about them. Of course music is also about the instruments. With its high lonesome harmonica and hearty harmonies blending with banjos and bass, “Caroline” is an American song through and through and Old Crow Medicine Show is an American band.
