Dark Dark Dark – New York Song

The name lets you know what you’re getting into. There is not a great abundance of major chords, the instrumentation harkens back to the days of yore, and the music is. . . astounding. The members of Dark Dark Dark seem to embody the spirit of a musical tradition that has long since passed us by. The groups members state no permanent address, instead admitting that permanent addresses “are something we don’t really relate to”. Instead of being locked into a specific locale, Dark Dark Dark apparently wanders between New York and Minneapolis, embracing some of the gypsy ethos that is palatable in their music. “New York Song” gives us a glimpse of what is to come from the group’s upcoming release The Snow Magic, and the music is brimming with emotion and innovation. The track opens with a foreboding lead played on accordion, anchored by a solid foundation of upright bass and banjo. Crystal clean vocal harmonies belt out a cautionary tale that laments, “Being here is like breathing on the hottest day, I think I was rather suffocating”, solidifying a theme of stagnancy and claustrophobia. Listening to Dark Dark Dark, one thing becomes immediately obvious, this is a group that uncompromisingly attacks their artistic craft, and the result is a uniquely American voice that is breathing life into a musical culture that has become stagnant and suffocated itself. Look for The Snow Magic, released by Supply and Demand Music, on Oct. 28th!
