Fol Chen-The Beautiful Ones

Covers are great, unless they’re not, but this one is. Who doesn’t love Prince? This was always one of my favorite Prince songs and Fol Chen put a great spin on it. In fact, for Spin’s Purplish Rain compilation. They put the playful into the plaintive and add great electropop elements and a kicking rhythm track. And the passionate part at the end, “Do you want him? Do you want me? Cause I want you,” makes me shiver. It’s the originality that distinguishes a cover, and this one’s got it and then some. It is one of the beautiful ones.
