Ah, the eternal vicissitudes of the drum machine. High Places’ Robert Barber and Mary Pearson have combined equal parts electronic and organic in creating some more than mildly intriguing music. “From Stardust to Sentience” opens with an intro that recalls Amiina (Icelandic string quartet, friends of Sigur Ros) mixed with The Album Leaf, and combines softly beckoning vocals to complete this intoxicating aural brew. This track immediately triggers various mental ques that acknowledge the influence of multiple sonic influences in the compositional style of High Places (the aforementioned The Album Leaf, Amiina, and Postal Service to name a few), however the duo manage to craft their own unique aesthetic by manipulating the basic structure of a song by adding and removing layers of sound from their sonic canvas. The end result is a surreptitiously subtle, yet intriguingly hypnotic sound that induces the listener to emit their own sigh as they float off into High Places.
