Junk Science like junk food is yummy. Science is not boring for these guys as they school us with “Running Shoes,” the first track from their upcoming album, A Miraculous Kind of Machine. This is underground hip hop at its finest. Baje One’s flow is smooth and his rhymes are intelligent. DJ Snafu’s beats are the perfect backdrop for his partner and blend together seamlessly.
“Running Shoes” is about Obama. Specifically about the hope he inspires that things might actually change for the better. Some complain about Obama towing the same lines as his predecessor but he has taken actions that Bush never would have. I remain optimistic and the fact remains that President Obama has inspired the nation and the world to hope and that’s no small feat considering the past decade.
Baje is quoted as saying, “Just the possibility alone that things could be different than they were before, that was enough for me. So that’s where this song comes from. It’s an Obama song that has nothing to do with politics.” Or, as he raps, “It’s the middle of the night but the sun is sky high and I watch the world change in front of my eyes no shade from the light, don’t know where to go, standing at the intersection between fear and hope…they say we can’t change, guess what we still could.”
