At times it may seem as though I post quite a few San Francisco based bands, however it is with good cause. It isn’t because I live in this fair city and it isn’t due to the vastly colorful and rich musical history of this metropolis. No, I’ve been posting about the Bay Area music scene because its is the best its been in years! Groups such as Or, The Whale, The Dodos, and Girls have recently been the focus of the national indie spotlight, and the bands continue to keep on coming. Social Studies is now emerging from the Golden Gate’s folds to take their place in the pantheon of important indie pop, and their music couldn’t be more engaging. “Time bandit” opens with soft crooning vocals and gentle accents of digital tones, as Natalia Rogovin and Michael Jirkovsky succeed in crafting a soothing pop intro before the first of many tempo and tone shifts sees the band quickly surging into danceable, hypnotic, rock leaning electro-pop. With a new full length due out in January of 2010, keep your eyes on Social Studies, for this is just the beginning.
