Big Boi + Modest Mouse = The Worst Exciting Idea Ever
Modest Mouse play angry, misanthropic indie-rock complete with barked vocals and slack, out-of-tune musicianship. Big Boi, both in his tenure in Outkast and on his own, makes some of the most dynamic, retro-futurist, funk-heavy hip-hop available. Anyone who thinks these sounds should be combined, speak now.
Um, okay, Big boi? “Me and @mouche1 [OutKast producer Chris Carmouche] in the studio workin with Modest Mouse on their new album Turnt up ! Shout out to Issac and the crew!”
That quote appeared on Big Boi’s twitter account on March 25th, and lest you think that tweet is a result of a gas leak or some fever dream, Big Boi followed it up yesterday with this one: “Been camped out in the Lab with Modest Mouse all week, workin on the new mouse LP, coolest cats ever. Long Live The Funk.”
So let’s review: If these tweets are to be believed, then A) Modest Mouse has recruited Big Boi to help them make their next album, which is a bad idea because, well, it’s such a goddamn bad idea, B) said album may very well be called Turnt Up, and C) Turnt Up will be either partially informed by, or entirely comprised of, funk music.
Obviously, there will need to be more substantive evidence that this is happening, but for now, it’s an idea too batshit to ignore. Oh well, off to scour the internet for similar stories. Maybe Pixar and the Coen Brothers are working together?
