Jeff Mangum Growing Less Elusive, Adds Tour Dates

For whatever reason, there only appear to be five or six existing pictures of Jeff Mangum. Every time he’s popped up from his self-imposed exile over the past decade, music websites have accompanied their articles twitching with jittery excitement about his potential return with the same handful of photos. Somehow, there’s always a vaguely funereal quality to them, inexplicably capturing some cryptic, possibly tragic, quality about Mangum that made his departure from the public eye an inevitability. They’re the sort of photos you use to accompany an obituary. Look at the top of this article to see what I mean.

So we’re excited to report that Mangum is on the cusp of a serious solo tour, if only because this means that the number of Magnum pictures must increase as a result (and yeah, it would be pretty wonderful to hear any of his old songs, or new songs, for that matter). Maybe someone will get some candid photos of Mangum tripping, or sneezing, or scratching himself. He’s a great songwriter, but seriously, his mystique is ridiculous. Someone has to puncture it.

Anyway, Mangum recently added dates in Vermont, Quebec, Massachusetts, and Maryland to an already lengthy (by his standards) tour. The full list of dates is below, as is a pretty lovely video of Mangum performing Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Engine” to remind you why music journalists still treat this guy like the one that got away.
