New Single! Album News! Tour Dates! From Exclamation Point-Enthusiasts Art Brut!
Brilliant! Tragic!, the fourth album from conversational smart-asses Art Brut, and second featuring Black Francis handling the entirety of the production, will be released by Cooking Vinyl/The End Records on May 24th. For those of you who think that you’ve got Art Brut pegged as a band of serviceable players raised to more interesting heights by frontman Eddie Argos’ acerbic and relatable spoke-sung lyrics (a trick that has unfortunately and unsurprisingly turned tiresome to some observers), Argos offers these tidbits about what distinguishes their forthcoming LP from Art Brut’s previous work:
“I sing on this one, Ian has a new pedal, Fred sings backing vocals for the first time and we let Jasper play a guitar solo (only on two strings though). Also, with the writing for the last album I really enjoyed writing about Mundane things trying to make them exciting. There were songs about riding buses, summer jobs and having songs trapped in your head. This time the album is more about how I think I’m psychic, songs for my funeral, the principality of Sealand and Axl Rose. Weightier topics I think. I’m also sexier now”
There you have it, Brut fans. Argos may sing a little and get a little heavy from time to time, but he’ll never lose his prankish wit. Beautiful! Tragic!‘s lead single, “Lost Weekend” offers some evidence of a willingness to change. The band is in fine, Strokes-ian form, and Argos is typically droll (“I’m sorry if I embarrassed you/by saying something stupid like ‘I love you'”). Not sure if what Argos is doing technically qualifies as singing, but it’s certainly different than his usual beery bluster. Listen for yourself and decide.
