Allison Weiss – …Was Right All Along

Once in a while you’ll find that album you’ve been missing — one that upon first listen, the songs instantly reside inside your mind and refuse to let go. Allison Weiss’ gem, …Was Right All Along (indicating the artist herself), is a near perfect record. Each of the 11 tracks are marked by consistently heartfelt lyrics, Weiss’s adorably quirky but strong voice and good composition.

Part of what endears Weiss to the listener is the feeling that she is truly opening up and sharing these stories not only as an artist, but in an act of catharsis. That kind of vulnerability is usually accompanied by a overly emotional aesthetic that overruns a record, but not here — even the personal ‘July 25, 2007′ feels personal while avoiding the drama.

It’s hard to pick a standout on such a loaded disc, but “You & Me & Alcohol” is a fun, up-tempo tribute featuring Weiss’ undeniable quirkiness and sensational lyrics like, “There’s wine on my shoes from the time I spilled it/ That morning I knew that you were the one/ You made me believe things could be different/ To my disbelief, the damage was done/ The stain, it won’t come out/ And now when I look down/ I see you, I see you.” “Yer Going Down” is another feisty tune that shows off Weiss’s deceptively nice vocal range, while “Ghost Stories” is an effective, sweet turn toward the mellow side.

From top to bottom, …Was Right All Along is an album within which you can uncover new twists upon each listen — whether it’s the strong playing, the nuanced writing or personal feel throughout the entire emotional affair. Simply, it’s an album, that when finished, you isntantly ask, “Who is this person and where can I immediately find more?”
