You knew the fat jokes were bound to continue with anything new Gabriel Iglesias was going to release, and that’s certainly true – even on the title – for his new DVD, I’m Not Fat, I’m Fluffy. The Comedy Central release features the Last Comic Standing finalist in typical form – focusing on his body size and food in general with a mixed bag of jokes that are sometimes hilarious and sometimes groan-worthy.
Recorded from a live comedy routine from El Paso, Texas, Iglesias largely (no pun intended) proves his comedy success with a strong stage presence culled from years of performing stand-up from local clubs to shows like The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel and other late-night shows. He’s also had two other Comedy Central specials besides this one – with each one focusing on his levels of obesity or what he calls the “Six Levels of Fatness.”
In fact, it’s in his routine when he introduces himself as “still the Fluffy Guy,” the audience goes crazy. It’s his endearing personality while joking to an obese culture that largely draws people in. It’s in this video that his audience is introduced to the newest level of fat called “Oh, hell no!” Before the final level was “Damn!” but in that case, it’s someone who still works. Here he breaks down his latest level of fat and it keeps the audience in absolute stitches.
In other sections, he discusses Barack Obama (my personal favorite) and Disney movies. But another crowd favorite is his attempt to check into a hotel late at night where the bell he continues to ring to no avail. It’s a hilarious routine full of racial stereotypes and spot-on cultural observances. Personal stories with his own interaction with late night television and his girlfriend’s son Frankie are also quite amusing.
In the end, I’m Not Fat, I’m Fluffy gives you exactly what you want from Iglesias. His routines never truly change in overall subject matter, but what he does he does quite well.
