Hunters, Run! – EP3
Working together with up-and-coming artists in New York City, fellow citizens Hunters, Run! are in the midst of releasing a series of four EPs — although that title should be used loosely. Really, they’re intended as 7″ vinyls, but since not everyone is retro enough to move such directions, the tunes are also available in varied formats. Either way, the five-piece further develops their own niche with these boutique releases that continue to sell out.
To explain, EP3 is the obvious third in a planned series of four vinyl/disc releases that come limited in batches of 200. When the initial batch sold out, they created a second which also sold out. The same can be said of EP2. Now on EP3, Hunters, Run! tones things down after a more up-tempo first half of the series with “Life of Crime” and “Oh My Ageless Brother.” Both tracks feature allow the songs to fully bloom, clocking in at over five minutes.
In the case of “Oh My Ageless Brother,” strings buoy and embolden the slight post-punk guitars that are allowed to drone on and on. For some, the tune’s repetitive nature will be a turn-off, but the atmosphere created by the wall of guitar progressions is worth developing. “Life of Crime” rides vocal harmonies, minor string work and a dominant synth to the same affect — coming alongside the guitars with a triumphant chorus. It’s the stronger and most memorable of the two songs.
The importance and appreciation of art on a project like this is refreshing to see how the digital music age can still provide something visually stimulating while placing the music within such a context. Hunters, Run! carves their own bit of territory here, and fan should appreciate this third installment.
